10 self-care ideas to make adulting more manageable

self-care ideas to enjoy adulting

Guest post written by A Grand Femme

It’s easy to get lost in the whole overwhelming process of being an adult. From having to deal with work-related issues to having to deal with relationships and other ships in between, it can get a bit much. Makes me wonder why I wanted to be an adult so bad, as it’s just an unending roller coaster of responsibilities. Which is why I make efforts to indulge in a self-care routine.

With self-care, you’ll find that things are easier, you’re more productive and you have so many good feelings that you can then transmit to others. If you don’t know where to begin with I listed down 10 self-care ideas to make adulting more manageable.

self-care ideas for adults

Make your health the topmost priority

As the popular saying goes, health is wealth. Without good health, nothing will make sense. And you can only do your best work when you’re healthy. In order to prevent burnouts, stay on top of your physical health, and be the best version of yourself.

Eat healthy

Having a healthy diet is a great self-care routine idea. As an adult it’s important you eat foods that will help to boost your mood, make you feel great, and keep you in top-notch physical health. With healthy food, you’re on the right track. I know I’m not the only one who feels really great after a healthy meal.

A good way to start eating healthy is to stay away from overly processed foods and stick to foods that are close to natural. Another way is to incorporate fruits and veggies into your daily meals.

Get enough sleep

Sleep is an important factor in how you function, your physical health, mood, stress, and overall mental wellbeing. So if you’re not getting enough sleep at night, it’s bound to affect the way you feel while awake and how well you relate with others.

You can get started on this by having a bedtime routine. Pick a time when you feel it’s best for you and go lights out. For me, I find that 11 pm works best. I finish up everything that has to do with work by 9 pm and spend the next two hours chilling out after which I turn off the lights.

This really helps in getting my recommended hours of sleep and gives me so much mental clarity during the day.

Have a power morning routine

A list of self-care routine ideas is incomplete without a morning routine. How you take your mornings can have an impact on how well the rest of your day goes. Take your mornings simply and in a mindful manner.

Asides your skincare routine of cleansing and moisturizing, you want to take a few minutes to do something for your mind. Medications are a good way to start and I also like to listen to affirmations during this time too.

You also want to take time to do something in terms of keeping fit. It could be a run/walk or something as simple as a few push-ups. This will help set your body in motion for what’s to come.

Set a boundary between work and personal time

As adults, it’s easy to get caught up in work and so in one way or the other, you’re working every time. Even if you’re not physically at it, you’re at it mentally. It’s even so much harder to set boundaries if you’re working from home.

Personal time is just as important as work time and setting a boundary between them will help you greatly in terms of self-care.

What you can do to get into this, is to let people know you won’t be available after work hours. And if you work from home, treat it like you have to go to an actual office. Get dressed, start work in the morning, and finish up in the evening.

Setting a work-life balance is really important and you’ll find that it comes with such great results.

Do the things that make you happy

As adults, a lot of important tasks take up our time and we just forget to live. We forget to do the things that really matter to us, that makes us happy. However, taking time out to do something that would make you happy is very important for self-care.

Spend time with people you love, take out time to do your favorite things, basically, just live life. The pursuit of material wealth doesn’t have to take up every minute of your day. Do things that are worth remembering and that will put smiles on your face in old age.

Appreciate the good things of life

More often than not, we fail to see the beauty of life and appreciate them. It’s really easy to focus on all the negativity that surrounds you and forget to show gratitude for the positives.

Take time to count the blessings in your life and be thankful. Blessings like family, good health, shelter, and love. Basically, all the seemingly little things that make life more meaningful.

Don’t be a people pleaser

When I say don’t be a people pleaser, I really mean learn to say no. It’s so easy to say yes to every single request even if it’s at the expense of your well-being and happiness.

If you’re really serious about self-care, then you should know that you can’t please everyone. You’re only human and can’t possibly make everyone happy. Self-care basically has to do with keeping yourself in the best physical and emotional health possible.

And to achieve this, you have to sometimes hurt the feelings of other people by saying no. It’s not being selfish but knowing that your peace and emotional health is important as well.

Keep your environment clean

Asides the health benefits of having a clean environment, it can also help to reduce your stress level and up your productivity. Whether it be a workspace or your living space l, strive to keep it clean at all times. Cleaning your space can also serve as very good therapy to your anger issues and whatnot.

Invest in personal growth

Personal growth isn’t just about learning things that can make your life better but also about implementing them. You can read all the books on self-improvement all you want but you defeat their purpose if you don’t put what they preach into action.

Basically, be proactive about personal growth. Learning is just a baby step, acting is the big leap.

Adulting is hard, having a self-care routine makes it easier.

Thank you for sharing these.

  25. Amazing list! I think all too often we think of self care as being simply treating ourselves to a bath, or a nice coffee but this post proves it is so much more than that.

People pleasing is a big issue for me! I tend to forget myself while making sure everyone else is happy!

  26. I’ve noticed that the key to happier, healthier life really is all about the “little” things, like eating and sleeping well. But on top of that it’s of utmost importance to draw a very clear line between work and free time: they should never be mixed, even if you like what you do! Work can so easily sneak in and take control of everything and that’s when lives fall apart. Great post!
